Botulism is one of the most feared food poisonings.

United Natural food recalls food because it can cause botulism.

Botulism

This is one of the most feared and dangerous types of food poisoning. Symptoms can begin from 2 hours to 10 days. The most unique adult symptoms are double vision and weakness; in infants poor feeding and constipation.

Symptoms usually appear 8 - 36 hours after you eat contaminated food. There is NO FEVER with this infection. In adults, symptoms may include: abdominal cramps, breathing difficulty that may lead to respiratory failure, difficulty swallowing and speaking, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, weakness with paralysis (equal on both sides of the body)

Symptoms in infants may include: constipation, poor feeding and weak sucking, weak cry, respiratory distress, weakness and loss of muscle tone.

Prevention
Since infants are the most commonly affected group, NEVER give honey or corn syrup to infants younger than 1 year old -- not even just a little taste on a pacifier. Prevent infant botulism by breastfeeding only, if possible. Always throw away bulging cans or foul-smelling preserved foods. Keep foil-wrapped baked potatoes hot or in the refrigerator, not at room temperature.
