Press Release: Platte River Academy Distinguishes Itself as a DiningGrades.com Facility of Excellence.

Highlands Ranch, CO-  April 19,2012

Ten Platte River Academy parents and staff were awarded a DiningGrades.com Food Server Certificate for completing a course on food safety.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 7% of all Norovirus food poisoning can be traced to food served at schools. Many schools in the U.S. prepare and/or serve lunch to its students. At Platte River Academy (PRA), a charter school in Douglas County School District, school staff and volunteer parents serve the catered lunch on a daily basis. In most schools these servers, whether staff or volunteers, seldom have any training in safe food handling skills.

Dr. Gary Stueven, Principal of Platte River Academy, chose to change that norm. He presented a pilot plan to the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) inviting volunteer lunch servers to take a course on food safety. The PTO and the Governing Board endorsed the idea and the response from parents exceeded expectations.

What precipitated this endorsement were the recent cantaloupe food poisoning epidemic in Colorado and an awareness of the national statistics regarding food poisoning.  Accordingly, Principal Stueven sought a way to improve food safety by eliminating food contamination and the subsequent possibility of food poisoning.  He learned of a DiningGrades.com food safety course. Ultimately the course and quiz were fashioned to meet PRA’s specific needs as a food server. The course and quiz can be accessed online for free at DiningGrades.com and for a nominal fee. Those passing the quiz can be awarded a completion certificate.

“As this program is fully implemented for the 2012-13 school year, our students will be safer and their parents can rest assured that we are making efforts to reduce the chances of food contamination and the possibility of children getting food poisoning”, Dr. Stueven said.

While food poisoning may seem to be just an unfortunate experience, on a daily basis eight people die each day, 350 people are admitted to a hospital and 1 of 6 Americans get sick. Sometimes the illness causes long term health effects such as arthritis, colitis and kidney failure. Children are especially vulnerable.  It is hoped that with staff and volunteers taking this online course and quiz the risk of PRA students experiencing food poisoning will be further reduced.

By encouraging volunteer food servers to become food safety trained, PRA becomes a leader and an example to other schools also concerned about food safety for its students.
