In my practice of Emergency Medicine I have seen hundreds of patients with food allergies.

The FDA states:

  • approximately 2 % of adults and about 5 percent of infants and young children in the United States suffer from food allergies
  • each year, roughly 30,000 individuals require emergency room treatment and 150 individuals die because of allergic reactions to food

Salsa and Guacamole: Are They Safe?

Last week, my colleagues and I presented our research on foodborne outbreaks linked to salsa and guacamole. Recently, the number of these reported outbreaks has increased. Between 1998 and 2008, nearly 1 of every 25 outbreaks associated with restaurants or delis may have been caused by contaminated salsa or guacamole.

Holiday Food Safety Bloopers
